Hello Special People
“Every time you smile at someone, it is an action of love, a gift to that person, a beautiful thing” Mother Teresa.
As it is the anniversary of her death this week, I have been recapping on her story. She was the founder of the Order of the Missionaries of Charity, a worldwide mission dedicated to worshipping Jesus by serving the poorest of the poor. In 1979, she was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for her work bringing help to suffering humanity.
Born to Albanian parents in Skopje, now the capital of North Macedonia, aged 18, she travelled to Ireland to become a nun, subsequently teaching in India for 17 years. In 1946 Mother Teresa experienced a 'call within' to work with the destitute in the slums of Kolkata. The religious order she founded established a hospice, centres for the blind, the aged and the disabled, as well as a leper colony.
By the time of her death in 1997, the Missionaries of Charity numbered more than 4,000 – as well as thousands more lay volunteers – with 610 foundations in 123 countries around the world.
“There is a terrible hunger for love,” Mother Teresa once said, “We all experience that in our lives – the pain, the loneliness. We must have the courage to recognize it".
She died a saint on the 5th of September 1997.
"Bring love into your home, for this is where our love for each other must start”, Mother Teresa.
This was certainly the case for us at the weekend as we celebrated Father’s Day with John. The morning commenced with phone calls from the New Zealand family, and then we followed with early lunch at Longtime, an amazing Asian restaurant in the city. The most beautiful food and setting, and we all thoroughly enjoyed the experience.
The phone call from NZ was quite hilarious as the children are all so on top of this social media, and the face time etc. is all so new for John and me. We were having difficulty in which way the camera was supposed to be facing, and the children found this hilarious. It is amazing how you can feel so close from such a long distance via this platform. Today was the celebration of our youngest grandchild, Ted’s birthday, who turned ten, so this morning we were able to view the new shoes and laptop along with the birthday cake. The family arranged for him to open our gift while he was talking with us, so it certainly helps not being able to be together in person.
We have rain predicted here in Brisbane tomorrow, along with a prediction for another month of rain, so John and I took the opportunity to shuffle the roses in readiness. He is so patient in this area as I select which pots go where. The weather hasn't really been conducive to the roses budding and I was speaking to my sister this evening who lives in Toowoomba, where the Carnival of Flowers is currently being held, and she mentioned the rose gardens, which are usually a mass of flowers for the Carnival were not in bloom there either. Maybe too much rain and not enough sunshine. Hopefully, as summer approaches, this will be remedied.
If Mother Teresa's quote – "It's not about how much you do but how much love you put into what you do that counts", reflects on the attention and love our roses receive, we look forward to lots of flowers in summer.
Let's close today with another of her famous quotes “Be kind to each other, it is better to commit faults with gentleness than to work miracles with unkindness."
Take care and be kind this week, and we send the blessings of peace and happiness. Love Annette
